Shaun of the Dead Trailer analysis - Comedy

Shaun of the dead is a comedy film is based around a group of friends that have to survive a zombie take over. this type of film is aimed at younger adults around 15+ due to the nature of the film.

Sound: The film opens with non diegetic music which subverts that genre to make the audience think its a horror due to the type of music played. this is very effective as it keeps the audience thinking and engaged in whats going to happen and whats the film going to be about. this is linked to the sound of moaning that is commonly heard in most zombie horror films. the sound is then met with a build of of more non diegetic sound but this time with a more up beat tempo that links more to a comedy genre the moaning slowly fades out so that the more up paced music can come throw more clearly. the next piece of sound used in the trailer is dialogue through voice over with ambient sound to make the scene look more authentic and real. the trailer then cuts through to two characters sitting on the bed with dialogue said through both characters which is heard a as joke and said in a joke like way this use of diegetic sound helps the trailer link back to the type of genre it is. later on in the trailer two characters are sitting in a pub and aq use of diegetic sound through talking helps set a natural public environment then a loud drop in the non diegetic tempo creates a pause in the atmosphere and makes the genre feel subverted again. this is very effective as it makes the audience feel more engage due to the confusion of genre indicators. the different types of sound in this trailer is used to great effect, for engagement , to create different types of atmosphere and for laughter as the genre is comedy.

editing: in the opening to the trailer a fade from black to white is used to start the trailer this is effective as it helps start the trailer in a more fluent and natural way. the scene then quickly ace cuts to different shots of the main character getting ready for what looks like work as one of the shots is of a name badge, these shots zoom in quickly to give a more quicker pace of the trailer. this is an effective style of editing as it links nicely to the non diegetic sound and this type of edit is seen a lot in comedy films. the zoom in editing feature that is used throughout this trailer is used for great effect as it shows what type of action and task the character is doing. later on in the trailer when the two characters are sitting in the pub a a fade to black is quickly usd when the atmosphere changes and the pace of the edits slow down this is used for a more scarier effect which is used to more the audince feel more worried in a comical way. following this scene a fade to clack is used to show text which is commonly seen in trailers, these fade to clacks are used well to add text as it makes the audince focus of the text for the amount of time that its shown normally just one or two words that can be a question for the viewers. the scene then cuts to shot bursts of news channels which is met with pace cuts again with a fuzzy like screen. this is effective as is gives a feel of a realistic tv that has lost connection this links well with the story line.

camera: In the trailer to shaun of the dead there is a mixture of different camera angles and shots used. there is a lot of close ups and medium shots throughout. in the opening scene we see a medium shot of some guys lower leg and feet with a slight high angle with it. this is effective as it guys a sense of vulnerability. the camera then pases up the charater to his face to capture his facial expression.this is effective in the trailer as it helps change the feel in the scene through facial expressions which like with the sound in this particular scene. the camera then cuts to pace close ups of what the character is doing, this is effective as it quickly helps the audience understand that the character is doing in the scene and what actions and activities hes doing but more sped up so that the close ups help move the scene forward more quickly. this is then followed up by an over the shoulder shot of him looking into a mirror this shot is effective in the scene as it shows his facial expression again so that the audince know how he feels about the situation in the scene which is shown as his work.  dollys shots are used for effective in the next scene to help show what direction the character is going, like when the character is running the camera is set at a long shot moving backwards this is effective because is shows clear movement of the character and helps the audience understand the struggle the character is going through as the whole body is seen in the long shot. the scene then progress to a close up of the characters face with the ca,era slowly moving in this zoom in dolly close up of the characters face is very effective as the moving gives the illusion of the character about to come to some destination as the facial expression is still and steady which makes him look like hes thinking. this same camera shots are seen and used through out of the rest of the trailer.

Mise en scene: In the opening to shaun of the dead as the camera zooms up as an audience we can see that it is set in a normal house. the scene then cuts to close ups of a normal morning routine of brushing teeth having a wash etc. this is very effective as it helps set the scene of the character being a normal ordinary person getting ready for work this is seen as the character puts on a name badge this type of costume and prop is very effective as it helps the audience understand what's coming up im the next scene help the audience understand what type of job the character had this can help the audience tell what kind of person he is.the scene the cuts to the character getting in and out of a london cabby this is very effective as it implies that the character lives somewhere near london due to the type of taxis.the type of costume that the characters are wearing are very stereotype of a job worker a shirt and tie.  as the trialer progress the characters costume gets more and more scruffy which shows that hes going through a hard and rough time.  the costumes of the zombies are seen as normal wear that average people wear, but due tot the nature of zombies the clothes are scruffed up and covered in blood. this is effective as it makes the zombies look more realistic and helps the over take of the world look more realistic due to them just being ordinary people. other effective use of mise en scene in the trailer is the make up of the zombies this has a huge impact of the scene of realism as it makes the zombies look more authentic.
