Super bad Trailer analysis - Comedy
Sound: In the opening scene of the trailer upbeat non diegetic sound is used, this creates a happy engaging feel to the scene and helps the audience categorize the genre as being a comedy. Dialogue is also used in a friendly joke like way this sound is played in the foreground of the scene to make the dialogue clear to hear, this links well with the non diegetic music in the background. the sound then stops to allow the funny bit of the dialogue to come through and helps make the scene more effective as a comedy. The non diegetic starts and stops through out this trailer to allow the dialogue to be heard this is to allow the audince to feel more engaged and be more amused by the actual dialogue in the film this is what makes a comedy very successful as when people watching this type of genre they like to be entertained and watch something that they can relate to but also makes them laugh.
Camera: In the opening of the trailer the camera pans down onto the characters talking which is very effective as it helps set the scene and makes the audince feel engaged in the characters talking. This is then followed by the 180 degree rule as the characters are talking to each other this is very effective as it makes the audince watch the scene in more of a natural free flowing way. The camera shot used in this scene is a medium shot as the two boys are sitting in a car, a medium shot is also used for when the camera shows the woman standing outside, this is effective as it makes the woman look more on their level when talking to them.the scene then progress to the two boys getting of the school bus walking in slow motion this is used for a dominant look to characterize these to as being the main characters in the film. The shot used in this scene is a long shot to show their full body figures this linked with the slow motion walking is comical as this type of shot and action is normally used on muscular good looking people, this is seen as very comical. the scene then moves on after some titles show on the screen to an over the shoulder shot of one of the boys talking to a girl which is met smoothly after the reverse shot this is effective as it clearly shows the two characters engaging in conversation but also very effective as it shows the expression of the two characters, the boy being very nervous and shy due to his timid body language and the girl being very confident and chatty by making the conversation and stand in a upright posture. The scene then cuts to three boys on he sofa the shot used is a long shot this is very effective as it shows the surroundings and setting that the characters are in the boys are clearly watching something on the computer which is followed up by a swoop edit into a close up of what the boys are watching this is effective as it makes the audince feel engaged, as what they were watching is uncomfortable to watch its seen as comical due to the awkwardness of what their watching.throughout the trailer medium to long shots are used as most of this trailer is the characters talking so these type of shots are best used in the scenes to show the characters thoughts feelings and emotion this is effective as thats what the audince can relate to the most. Medium shots is a common camera shot to use in comedy as the dialogue is very important for the audince to here thats why these shots are so effective.
Editing: In the trailer the two boys get of the school bus the editing style used on this is a pace edit this is used to good effect as it's usually linked with the pace of the tempo. As the pace edit is linked with the change in tempo it gives more of a friendly feel to the scene which is very effective in a comedy. throughout thee trailer quick cuts are used to help the scenes move quicker this is effective as with the cuts a swoosh edit is used. This is very effective as it gives a comical feel that links well with the dialogue and sound. When the scene changes in the trailer to a different location or time a side swipe edit is used this is very effective as it allows the scene to natural change time or location but keeps the comical and joke like feel to the scene alive. This type of edit is also used throughout to show text to allow for it to flow in and out of scenes but still keep that upbeat vibe.
Mise en scene: In the opening scene we see a ordinary american family orientated street this is an effective setting as it allows for the audince to relate to the trailer in a more engaged way. This scene then jumps to the two boys in the car they are boy wear smart shirts with collars and the hair one neat and the other slightly scruffy this shows that the two boys arent very fashionable and are probable very nerdy and dont relate to anything that normal boys that age should be. The hair indicates that one of them is slightly more cared for than the other in a motherly way. Also the boy in the scene that has the messy hair has his short undone but the other boy has his done up this is effect as the audince can relate to boy characters and also characterize them as who's more daring than the other. the scene then cuts to the two boys getting of the school bus this is is effective as the school bus helps us as an audince know roughly their age and where the next scene will be set. As the scene progresses the characters change clothing the boys have shirts on with childish and comical prints on them this indicates to the audince that they are childish and younger minded. when the scene jumps to them being in school they are talking to girls they are wearing more revealing and more adult wear which is shows that they are more grown up than the boys. They are also wearing makeup and feminine coloured clothing this shows that the girl characters care a lot about their appearance this is stereotypical in girls in high school.
