Lighting for horror

  • Uplighting - the lighting of an characters face or figure which the  Light source is below this creatively creates shadows under neither the features of the faces such as the nose, eyes and chin. this is effective as it changes our view on the human face which gives the feeling of uncertainty.
  • Silhouette -  the lighting directed in front of a character or object so that from behind the character or object looks black which creates the silhouette effect. this use of lighting is effect as it can hide the identity of a character which makes the audience feel more engaged.
  • Spotlighting - this lighting is when I direct light source shines at a main figure or person to make them stand out more. This camera shot is effective because it easily makes someone or something standout to the audience which draws the attention on the one thing.
  • Underexposure - this type of lighting is when an object or person environment and them selves are of a different gradient in colour to change the mood or situation there in.
  • Harsh light (hard light, chiaroscuro) - this type of lighting creates sharp edged shadows which is why they work so well I'm horror films. they are used to make a scene more intense and scary through shadow.
  • Prominent and projected shadows - these two shadow techniques are effective as they represent figures and objects that aren't there for example the shadow of a person could be seen but the person isn't there this is why its So effectively used in horror.
- these are some common camera shots that are found in horror. that are used effectively to create different atmospheres or feelings that they want to audience too feel.

Camera

In trailer and films caerma is one of the key elects of setting the mood capturing the attention and making a character look and feel the way the audience want them to feel in the moment. there are a variety of different camera shots for example:

Related imageMedium shot - this is when the camera is potion about half way towards someones body so that only half of them or not all of the body is in the shot.  these shots are found run the genre horror frequently as the effect of the distant to the character allows the audience to see the setting but aisles the characters emotion and feelings.
Low angle shot - this shot type is used to make a character or object look domeient and strong the camera is at a low angle facing upwards to give the effect of the person or object height to look bigger which gives the effect of being threatened thats why this camera shot is seen in also horror to make the antagonist look more deadly and fearsome.
close up - this is when the camera is directed closely up to an object or persons face this camera shot is used effectively to capture the facial expression of a person or object this creates tension in a scene especially horror as it is normally used for the jump scares.

Over the shoulder shot - this shot is used to effect in all genre types as it allows for point of view.  this shot is also used when two people are seen in conversation as it allows for the audience to see the other persons facial expression thats not speaking. this shot is used in horror also effectively as when close up to the shoulder it burrs the background which in theory creates a edgy atmosphere.
Establishing shot - an establishing is commonly used in film to set a scene so that the audience can tell where the scene and next shot is going to be this is commonly seen In horror films as most American horror films are set in old suburban houses.

final wanted poster

Location pictures from air raid shelter

We visited an abandoned 1940s air raid shelter to film some scenes for our horror trailer. this was a effective location to film as it had a creepy demonic atmosphere due to the darkness and the vandalism over the walls. we took some shots of the location to show the main features in the location, we took a shot of the door as it looks very effective as the graphity and rusted door which gives the effect of violence. another effective shot was the writing on the wall saying shes watching we thought this was effective as the words play on the mind due to the unknown.

Behind the scenes of filming

Whilst filming for our trailer we took some behind the scenes shots of how we filmed certain shots and as you can see we went to some extreme lengths such as going through a murky stream of water to get the best shot what we could get. we tried different angles and shots but decided this angle was the best for the type of shot we were looking for.

developed wanted poster

This is the final design for our wanted poster we have added the picture of the antagonist and also added information below that is written to inform the people in the trailer about him. we have added the main aspects of a wanted poster and have changed and used different font for different sentence types. we made the poster in black and white as we thought that color would make it look less effective as we wanted it to be seen as dark and demonic as possible.

Wanted poster idea

this is our final choice for the design of our wanted poster. the idea behind the design was we wanted it to look warn and old fashion like to make the poster look more authentic. we thought that this design would be the best as its got a basic layout which allows us to add our own features to make it look personalized and unique for our film. in the center of our wanted poster will be a picture of the antagonist face which is the clown this will be the moment that the audience will be able to identify some features of the clown but be miss lead through the change of identity. due to the nature and characteristics that are seen in the face of the clown the audience will know that he is a evil demonic person.

Contact lense ideas for clown

To go with the make up look for our clown as a group we thought that contacts lenses would go with the look of our clown. the uses of contact lenses are seen to be used in most horror films to make the antagonist look more threatening and scary as we want to create the same aspects in our trailer we thought that it would be a good idea. having the use of contacts dehumanizes someone and doesn't make them look right which gives it that daunting effect. as we have designed the makeup of the clown to fit  the shape a style of a normal face with using only face paints the contacts would have a great effect and be one of the scary features that standout most. as this is an initail idea we havent decided as a group whether or not this feature will be used in our final costume creation for our antagonist.

Software Reserch

Adobe Premier elements 10

Before the stages of filming began we decided to research into good and easy to use video editing software. after finding a variety there was two options to chose from firstly is adobe premier elements 10 this software seems basic to use with some key professional elements to it, after looking further into this software we found out that it allows for so many editing options to video such as transitions audio and video changing also it allows you to change the colour through grading and effects that can be added. one of the key features that premier elements can do that stands out for me is the ability to use a green screen this means that if we were to use a green screen in our trailer theres a future that early and quickjly apples the green screen method for you.  another key feature that I think is effective is the ability to layer different pieces on top of each other this includes video audio and picture. Adobe premiere elements can be used for both begginer and intermediate leaners. the step by step guides built into thee software showing you how to use each feature correctly could be very helpful. and that the organisational future that automatically organises your footage and files is very beneficial.

                                                   IMovie

Another video editing software we researched into was iMovie this software is very similar to premier elements due to the simple use and layout of the software. its easy to organise video with the capability to cut crop duplicate video and images. also the ability to add over lays and text to image and video is very effective. even though this is a good software to use there are some things that aren't as good as premier elements for example the future to be able to cut and move audio is not apart of the iMovie software which is a paints making a trailer sound is very important so the freedom to move it around is key. another issue is that the layout of the software is harder to navigate due to the features being compact into one visible icon for example the video and audio are together in one bar unlike separate in premier elements. after the usage and trailing on both softwares finding out a discovering the different aspects of them as a group we have decided to use premier elements. last year for our opening 2 minutes we used iMovie for parts and due to the result also we thought as we wanted the more providential look and features for our trailer this year we would go for that.

Initial Storyboard

After doing initial ideas and deciding on what genre and title to use we created a storyboard that step by step scene by scene shows the chronological order of how our trailer is filmed. as this is an initial idea story board some of the ideas or scenes could change due to the development of our ideas throughout.

Location idea 3

Finally this is our location idea 3 which is set over in fetcham in seans house. me and Sean also speak about the features of the house and how they are and would be effective in our horror trailer. as a group we thought these three ideas would be most effective because there all opposite locations which allows us to explore all the possible features available to us.
